Four-pack or six-pack? Why your abs look the way they do
The number and symmetry of your ab blocks is genetic, set by the tendon bands that cross your abdominal wall. Some people have four, most have six, some have eight, and many are slightly uneven. You cannot add or realign blocks. You can only build the muscle and get lean enough to see them.
A six-pack is the most chased look in fitness, and one of the most misunderstood. The number and layout of the blocks is genetic, not earned.
What decides ab shape
Your “abs” are one long muscle (the rectus abdominis) crossed by bands of tendon called tendinous intersections. Those bands create the blocks. How many bands you have, and whether they line up evenly left to right, is set by genetics.
- Three pairs of bands → a six-pack.
- Two pairs → a four-pack.
- Four pairs → an eight-pack.
- Offset bands → a slightly staggered or uneven look.
How to tell
Get lean enough to see your abs, then look:
- Count the rows of blocks.
- Notice if the left and right sides line up or sit slightly offset.
That layout is yours for life.
What you can and cannot change
- Cannot change: the number of blocks, their symmetry, or their layout.
- Can change: how thick and visible they are. You build the muscle with training and reveal it by getting lean.
Chasing a “perfectly symmetrical six-pack” you were not born with is wasted energy. Build the abs you have and get lean.
How to train them
- Train abs with real load and full range, not just endless crunches: weighted work and controlled reps.
- Get lean enough to see them. Ab definition is mostly a body-fat result.
- Train the deep core too for a tight, flat waist.

FAQ
Can I turn a four-pack into a six-pack? No. The number of blocks is set by your tendon bands. You can only build and reveal what you have.
Why are my abs uneven? Offset tendon bands, which is common and genetic. It is not a training mistake and cannot be realigned.
Why can’t I see my abs even though they are strong? Body fat. Ab visibility is mostly about getting lean, not doing more ab work.
