Quick check: stand relaxed in a mirror. Shoulders roughly 3x your head width, and clearly wider than your hips, point to wide clavicles. Shoulders close to head width and barely past your hips are narrow.

2. Favorable muscle insertions
A muscle insertion is where the muscle attaches to bone. Low insertions with long, full bellies leave little gap near the joint, so the muscle looks thick and complete. High insertions leave a visible strip of tendon, which reads as a smaller, more peaked muscle.
Quick check: flex your biceps and look at the gap between the muscle and your elbow crease. Little gap means a low, full insertion. A clear gap (often a finger or two wide) means a higher one. The same check works for calves near the ankle.

3. Small joints (wrists and ankles)
Thin wrists and ankles are part of the “frame” effect. A small joint makes the muscle above it look bigger by contrast, the same way a tight waist makes shoulders look wider.
Quick check: wrap your thumb and middle finger around the opposite wrist, just below the hand. If they overlap easily, your wrists are on the small side. Compare your forearm width to your wrist: a big jump reads as a powerful taper.
What it does: small joints sharpen the contrast that makes arms and calves pop. Large joints can look sturdy and strong, but the muscle has to work harder to stand out. This one is purely visual, not a strength penalty.
4. Long muscle bellies vs long tendons
Closely tied to insertions: muscle is split between the contractile belly and the tendon that anchors it. A long belly with a short tendon fills the limb. A short belly with a long tendon leaves more visible tendon and less muscle to grow.
Quick check: relax the arm and look at how much of it is muscle versus the cord-like tendon near each joint. The more of the limb covered by visible muscle, the longer your bellies. Calves are the clearest tell: a calf that runs low toward the ankle is a long belly.
What it does: long bellies have more muscle to build, so they tend to grow into a fuller, rounder look. Short bellies still grow, they just keep a higher, more peaked shape.
5. A balanced ribcage
Your ribcage is the platform your chest and back are built on. A ribcage with good depth and width gives the torso a fuller, three-dimensional look and supports a wide back. A flat or narrow ribcage makes the same muscle look thinner from the side.
Quick check: turn sideways in a mirror, relaxed, and look at the depth of your chest from front to back. Good depth fills out a shirt and pairs with a wider front view. A shallow, flat chest line is a narrower ribcage.
What it does: it sets how full your torso looks before you add muscle, and it influences your waist-to-chest contrast. You cannot reshape the skeleton as an adult, but chest and back development build visibly on top of it.
6. A high shoulder-to-waist ratio
This is the V-taper, the number most people are really chasing. It is your shoulder width divided by your waist. Wide clavicles and a naturally narrow waist give you a high ratio before you train; wide hips or a thick waist work against it.
